Symbolism Essay Symbolism is a way to represent things by symbolic means. In the fiction book of “A Place Where the Sea Remembers” by Sandra Benitez, symbolism is used many times throughout the story. The symbols used explain the subject in different words but with the same meaning. A symbolic object that used in the story is Fulgencio’s camera. Fulgencio’s camera symbolizes money and fame. Fulgencio’s camera symbolizes many things such as money. There is a quote about the camera in the story where he thinks he will be rich someday. Fulgencio states “ ‘I have uncovered El Santo’s identity,’ Fulgencio would announce, and for a stiff price and the certainty of celebrity, he would provide the newspaper with the photographs showing the wrestler frolicking in the surf at an out-of-the-way beach without the full face mask that was his signature” (26). The camera is symbolic because he can make money off of the pictures he took with it. This can make Fulgencio rich overnight. Fulgencio’s camera symbolizes wealth for him. Fulgencio believes that his camera will make him famous in the future. He thinks that he will not be famous when the Gringo takes the camera and leaves. Fulgencio imagines, “He was alone. It was only himself and the deafening sea. He had no camera. No equipment. No photographs of El Santo to turn his life in a new direction” (40). After Fulgencio loses his camera, he thinks his life would be like never before. He believes he would not be famous in the future. Fulgencio knows that being a celebrity would be much harder now because Gringo is going to take credit for the pictures. Fulgencio symbolizes the camera as fame because the pictures he took with it would make him a celebrity. Fulgencio’s camera is one of the many objects that are symbolized in the story. It symbolizes money and fame for Fulgencio. Symbolism makes a big difference in the story
