Mood Swings I live about a five minute walk from the dorms. My home: a tall, sturdy tree that holds my rope perfectly. Picnic tables, art sculptures, healthy trees, a dried up creek and groomed grass surround me. Beneath me the grass fades way into dusty soil. Scuffed cheery red paint covers me. A rope attaches to holes drilled in my board. My rope frays a little on the edges from many hands grabbing me. Plastic covers my rope that wraps around the tree branch. Someone wanted to make sure that I would live here a long time. Contentment fills me to live here because I know I can make a difference. A little girl came to visit me today. She accompanied her mother and baby brother. While her mother busied herself with attending to the baby, the girl came to see me. I could immediately tell that she needed me to love on her. I see many children every day and they all need a release, a place to play and for someone to understand them. The baby always keeps Mom busy. The girl came and tentatively sat on me. I held as still as I could so that she could get on easily. Soon we were soaring into the sky and the positive mood that attends it. Yesterday I was swinging for a different purpose. I had seen this young man’s look before. He wanted desperately for this pretty girl, who accompanied him, to really like him. Inwardly I smiled. I loved this kind of case. I relate with those teenage girls who seem so enthralled with romantic chick flicks. I could not wait to see if they would work out. It was my job to create a cute romantic mood for them to converse in. No wild swinging today; all I could do was rock gently and peacefully so that they could sit together and get to know each other. Days and years go by, but here I am. Everyone will always need a stress reliever. My therapy differs between adults and children. Grownups require more relaxed, soothing conversational
