In this assignment, I am going to look at green procurement as an example of sustainable development in action. In specific, this assignment will focus on the green procurement policy and practice of Wiles Greenworld, an office supplies company in the United Kingdom.
For over 20 years, there has been an increasing concern that the present pattern of development is not sustainable (IGPN 2010). To say the least, we are living beyond what we can afford, through our various activities (economic, scientific and technology), we are using scores of resources, producing lots of wastes, and causing permanent damage to the environment, and this perpetual burden we are putting on the planet cannot persist forever (UN-DESA 2008).
The goods and services we procure and use on daily basis add value to our enjoyment and goodness, nevertheless, being conscious of the current levels of resource consumption and the significant impacts of these products on the environment is mounting among consumers, policy makers and businesses (Williams, S et al 2007).
The term green procurement could mean any action that we undertake to procure goods and services that aim to minimize environmental impact throughout their life cycle when put side by side to goods and services with same initial purpose that would otherwise be procured (EU Commission, 2011).
Wiles Greenworld is a private office supplies company that collects recycling when it supplies. The company is located at Perivale, West London, it provide services to a client base concentrated in central London. It is rated within the top fifty suppliers in the United Kingdom, and within five in London, having a customer base made of a different class of private sector and organisations including social clubs, financial institution and multimedia agencies (Wiles Greenworld 2012).
