Sustainable Community Development, Rural Kenya In one of the poorest regions of rural Kenya, an award winning social entrepreneur and his family are developing a project that has sustainability built into the core of it's foundations. Charles Mully, grew up in abject poverty and spent time as a street kid. Later, becoming a successful businessman, he invested his resources and acumen to give street kids a chance like he'd been given when an Asian family took him in as a gardener, eventually heading up their business. Inviting 200 street kids into their family home, selling all he owned to feed and clothe them over the next few years he eventually turned their "retirement farm" into a rehabilitation home. Charles and Ester have become Mum and Dad to over 6,000 in the last 20 years. Many of the young people having graduated the rehabilitation program, gained further education in organic farming, agriculture and development, now provide the leadership and staff of the Community Development Program. Over 10,000 farmers in the Ndlani area are now implementing organic farming and tree planting programs on their farms, in an area that was once almost barren. Natural forest nurseries are staffed by local women, donating local farmers with vegetable and tree seedlings, and 1 million trees every year to the Mt Kenya reforestation program. Organic beans are grown in the industrial greenhouses and currently provide much of the Europe's organic french bean supply.
