Sustainable business development: dependent on environmental quality Introduction Humans depend on the environment for a healthy and secure life. However, they have altered the ecosystems in a damaging manner in recent decades to meet increasing demands for food, water, etc. This has diminished the carrying capacity of natural systems, threatening well-being of humans. Strain on ecosystems will rise tremendously in the future unless human attitudes and actions are modified. Sustainable development is the development that satisfies the existing needs (current interaction with the environment) while conserving the environment so that the capacity of future generations to meet their own needs is not compromised. Present generations should also concentrate on improving the life of future generations by restoring the earlier environment damage and preventing them to hamper the ecosystem further. This development takes into consideration the effect on environment and thus, attempting to reduce the environmental impact. Sustainable development is interrelated with the concept of carrying capacity of ecosystems. Sustainable development is only possible when anthropogenic activity uses natural resources at a rate at which they can be regenerated. Unsustainable situation takes place when natural capital (overall resources) is used up faster than it can be regenerated. Sustainable development is generally categorized into three essential elements: environmental sustainability, economic sustainability and social sustainability. Recent records prove that the Earth is experiencing an increase in temperature at an extraordinary rate. Severe natural disasters (for example: floods, cyclones and droughts) are taking place more frequently and causing greater damage. The key reason causing the global warming is considered to be the excessive emission of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere
