Often in life, we come across people who are considered to be above average in some skill or in intellect. We deem these great men or women as our superior and eventually accept all their ideas and actions as correct, no matter what it is. Because their face is known by such a vast amount of people, we come to the idea that they are these incredible, invincible beings. The author of this text shares his attitude towards great men and uses various rhetorical devices to voice his opinion. In the first paragraph, he immediately appeals to ethos by mentioning the newspapers as they are a credible source of information. His diction at the beginning leads the readers to believe that he has a deep admiration for these men who are deemed to be great. We get a sense of envy from the author towards them. However, as the text progresses, he begins to develop a more critical attitude towards the ‘’great’’ men. We can see this point when he implies and poses the rhetorical question that if these men are so amazing and extraordinary, then why is there so many of them. This contradicting idea is central to the author’s attitude. The next paragraph goes on to embellish on this idea with specific and facetious examples of how some men are considered to be great. The speaker notes how doing mundane acts such as making a speech or rhyming can achieve someone great success. His sarcastic tone is conveyed in these examples as he wonders how it can be possible. The phrase, “trite sentiments”, for example, is used to emphasize on the idea that becoming someone great is quite easy and does not take an adequate amount of skill; immortality can be reached without much work.
