ENG 101 Super Teacher “Hollywood goes to school” by Adam Farhi is an article explaining how to recognize a super teacher. The super teacher myth starts with the teacher usually being a male who can overcome the odds. A super teacher has unique ideas of teaching and is reliable for the students. One who is able to proceeds solving student’s personal problems, but yet balances his own personal life. A super teacher is cult figure and can quickly transfer a class room. (Farhi57) Half Nelson directed by Ryan Fleack is a movie about Dan Dunne, a Middle school teacher living a double life. A secret that interferes with the life of Mr. Dunne was discovered by Drey a student of his. Mr. Dunne does not adequate the super teacher myth. Mr. Dunne is not a super teacher. To begin with, Mr. Dunne is not a super teacher because of his rebel life style. A serious drug addiction takes him away from living a normal life. Going out late at night and coming to school the next day with a hangover become’s a routine that puts his job on the line. Mr. Dunne is offered help to change his drug habit but believes rehab will not work for him. He has no motivation to teach the class with different techniques to help his students understand the concept. Help from the principal was given to him, but Mr. Dunne refuses and continues teaching his way although the lesson plan was not followed. Furthermore, Mr. Dunne students do not see a role model in him and can see he has no motivation in helping them become improved students. No effort from Mr. Dunne was made by making his classroom an educated environment. Student’s lives were not changed by Mr. Dunne nor were he a cult figure. Not one positive examples or change did Mr. Dunne set for his students. Mr. Dunne disobeys the school rules when smoking crack in the girl’s locker room bathroom, where he was caught by his student Drey.
