In Russel Baker’s essay “Becoming a Writer,” he explains how writing changed from being heavy labor to a calling. He started with everything associated with English boring him up until 11th grade. He said how dull and baffling English grammar was, and he didn’t understand how to create interesting compositions. Baker mentions that he set himself up for a dry year based on rumors concerning Mr.Fleagle from other high schoolers. Then the “comic antique” appearance and the uninspiring delivery of the reading by Mr. Fleagle convinced Baker writing was dull.

Their new English teacher, Mr. Keating or “The Captain”, is different from the rest and some of the students find him mad. In their first class, he brings them to see pictures of some of the former students at the school. Through poems he tells them to seize the day, Carpe Diem, a term which he thinks the students should live by. Mr. Keating’s way of teaching brings out the uniqueness of the pupils, but the other teachers, bound by traditions and discipline, do not like his way of teaching.
Completely stunned by the first words coming out of this new, intimidating teacher, I was excited for an English class for the first time. Growing up I absolutely dreaded reading and writing. They thought there were too many words in those books and they consistently opted for Cliff Notes instead of actually reading the assigned reading material. When I was in high school, there were so many students who slacked off and just wanted the answer handed to them. They never read their textbooks or other learning material and they consistently cheated their way through school.

When I eventually transferred to public schools, the issues that everyone overlooked because they were not an obvious problem for me really came back to haunt me when I was assigned any sort of extensive writing assignment. I continued to take reading classes in public school. Fortunately, I managed to get through my English classes and graduate high school never expecting to have to write any sort of paper again. While I thought that to be true for the first two years out of high school, that proved to be a poor mindset to have. June
