Behçet’s disease is an inflammatory disorder frequently involving the joints, gastrointestinal tract, and central nervous system. The disease consists of oral and genital ulcers, uveitis, and skin lesions that are recurrent. The region where the disease mostly occurs in is Turkey, however, the disease is the number one cause of death along the “Silk Road”. Environment seems to play a role in the upbringing of the disease, as those who move away from Turkey are less likely to obtain the disease than those who reside in Turkey. However, these individuals that left Turkey still have a higher risk of obtaining the disease than those who are not natively Turkish. That being said, the cause of Behçet’s disease is still unknown, but epidemiologic findings suggest that either an infectious or environmental agent, or both trigger it. Nevertheless the cause, the target for this disease seems to be small blood vessels. Many researchers believe that there is more than one infectious agent present in this disease. One action the disease organizes is the use of false signaling in order for inflammatory cells to initiate which in turn leads to vasculitis. Since the disease is somewhat similar to the herpes virus, researchers have looked into it. They found that the herpes simplex virus-1 is the most common virus associated in behçet’s disease along with other viruses that could play a role. Different types of antigens were used in order to see if it would have any effect on the disease. In their study and from years before, we know that antiseptic agents and antibiotics have been shown to reduce any more damage from the disease. Chlorhexidine gel and triclosan have been shown to reduce the number, duration, and pain of ulcers. Antibiotics and several mouthwashes could also reduce the duration and pain of ulcers and have been shown to reduce the growth of streptococci virus (which may be present).
