Concepts for Successful Organizational Communication Edna Bentley COM 425 – Communication in Organizations Instructor: Mrs. Marice Jackson October 21, 2013 Concepts for Successful Organizational Communication Lee Iacocca is quoted as saying, “You can have brilliant ideas, but if you can't get them across, your ideas won't get you anywhere” (Kreps, 2011). That is the heart of what this class, under the instruction of Mrs. Jackson, was designed to convey about communication in organizations. The purpose of the COM 425 Final Paper is to provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of communication concepts through the proposal of a new communication structure for an organization. Strategic organizational communicators will implement these concepts to inform organizational practices, improve work relationships and organizational outcomes. This paper will present some of the key concepts (leadership strategies, formal and informal communication, organizational culture, conflict resolution and active listening) that organizational communicators can consider and implement to address the complexities of successful communication within their workplace. Leadership Strategies “Every time we communicate with others in organizational settings we have the opportunity to meet others’ communication expectations and encourage these organizational participants to reciprocate by meeting our communication expectations” (Kreps, 2011). Organizational leaders need to be cognizant of this if they and the organization are to be successful. Even though some people may have been born with innate leadership aptitudes, effective leadership communication skills are learned over time.
