She was now on her way to drop off the uranium at Leyte, but not before they had to pick up even more sailors in Guam. About one o’clock in the morning while positioned between Guam and Leyte, the ship was hit by two Japanese submarines. Out of the six torpedoes fired only, two torpedoes hit her. The first torpedo hit the middle of the ship, and the second hit the bow of the ship where the ammunition, bombs, and gun powder were stored, the fuel tank was right next to that room. At the time the second torpedo hit, there was a huge explosion.
Early 1900’s a time of change and tragedy The explosion from the impact, the rush of water flooding every nook and cranny, abandoning ship and boarding the crowded lifeboats trying to stay out of the frigid water. The German submarine warfare in the early 1900’s took many lives, and in the case of the Lusitania, civilian lives. The world in the early 1900’s was influenced and shaped by many inventions but two stand out, the assembly line and the Ford Model T. The early 1900’s was a new time full of inventions and war, all influencing Aldus Huxley to write Brave New World. Henry Ford’s invention of the assembly line is a huge advancement in manufacturing. This allows many items to be produced, by people with very little skill and training,
Indianapolis was deemed fit for duty She was call upon to carry out a secret mission that only the highest-ranking officers knew the details about. The Indianapolis sailed to California to pick up parts and enriched uranium that would be used to build “little boy”, the atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima. After a successful unloading at Tinian She was directed to join the battleship USS Idaho in the Philippines to prepare for the invasion of japan. On 10 July the Indianapolis was steaming towards Japan from the US base in Guam when just around midnight She was struck with two torpedoes fired from a Japanese submarine. With in twelve minuets she sank bow down listing to the starboard side.
3. The Maine battleship killed 266 sailors, by a boat related malfunction. US then declared war on Spain, after president mc kinley signed the teller amendment. 4. It caused 266 lives and United States went into war against Spain.
Liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen then mixed and ignited, causing the explosion that destroyed the Challenger" (Palmer, Dunford, & Akin, 2009, p. 375). All the astronauts aboard the Challenger perished. Seventeen years later, on February 1, 2003, the Columbia disintegrated over Texas and Louisiana during re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere. During lift-off, insulating foam fell from the fuel tank onto the wing, which caused a breach in the fragile tiles that were to protect the shuttle from the heat of reentry. Days later, when the shuttle attempted reentry, the breach allowed heat into the wing, which caused destruction of the craft.
Sinking of the Lusitania WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SINKING OF THE LUSITANIA AND FOR THE LOSS OF SO MANY LIVES? CAN THEIR ACTIONS BE JUSTIFIED? As the ‘greyhound of the seas’ made her maiden her voyage across, the Atlantic Ocean, no one knew what lay ahead, why so many innocent lives would be taken. ‘Every soil has its secret of which we carry an unconscious image in our soul’. This quote by C. G. Jung, describes perfectly what was happening ninety seven years ago.
Cuba, a Spanish colony, had been in rebellion since 1895. The brutal Spanish response turned American sympathies to the Cuban insurgents. The US Battleship Maine arrived in Havanna Harbor in January 1898 with a dual mission to protect American interests and present the Spanish with a show of force. At 9:40 PM on the evening of February 15, an explosion ripped the forward hull quickly sending the ship to the bottom of the harbor, killing two hundred sixty-six of the 345 crew members. Investigations started immediately.
In 2010 is was found that a North Korean torpedo had been fired (on purpose) at a South Korean naval ship. Only eight months later North Korea fired 170 artillery shells and rockets at Yeonpyeong Island, where the South Korean military was stationed, then South Korea sent fighter jets to fight back(it is only human nature to get revenge). Around 15 people were killed and 50 were wounded. This is an example of an on-going grudge that only leads to more violence. Sometimes you do not need violence to get something done.
Titanic Presentation Notes * Process Used to Find the Titanic: (Bobby) * Discovered by Robert Ballard on September 1st, 1985 * Logbook of the Californian enabled Ballard to estimate the speed and direction of drift of the lifeboats. * The Californian was between five to ten miles away from the Titanic at the time of the disaster and reported in its log that they had experienced drift * Also Ballard knew that the Titanic had to be north of where the lifeboats were found * Titanic stemmed from a secret United States Navy investigation of two wrecked nuclear submarines * For 6 days, the Argo searched the sea floor and nothing came up. However, on the last day the team discovered a boiler * How the Titanic Sank: (Gary) * When a ship it sinks it leaves a path of debris (objects from within the ship or objects breaking off). Depending how deep the vessel sinks this debris can be scattered over a large distance. On a shorter descent, the debris falls more or less vertically.
The arms race began in 1945 when the US dropped their atomic bomb on Japan. Not only did this demonstrate the power of the USA but was the catalyst for an age of rapid weapon development, the arms race. This ended with the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1963, an event that bought the superpowers dangerously close nuclear war. A number of factors other than the accumulating advancements in weaponry lead to the Cuban missile crisis, the personalities of the leaders and the national interests of each country all effected how the arms race developed, leading to the inevitable situation where the USA and USSR were left hovering over the trigger. The main aspect that lead to the Cuban missile crisis was the arms development between 1945-1963.
