English Journal Essay Singaporeans, although are among the richest in the world and have succeeded in many aspects, are not flawless. Along with our strengths, we have many weaknesses too. So what are our strengths that led to many success and our weaknesses that are hindering us? One of the factors that contribute to our success is the facts that we are hardworking. We study hard, work hard ever since we first stepped into schools and have not slowed down until we retire. This may be due to the fierce competition in our country, people want to score well and be better than the rest in order to get into universities which would then get them better jobs. Even then they are constantly pursuing better things in life. This resilience has have us constantly improving ourselves, thus leading to our success. However, too much is never better, people can sometimes be pressurized by these and in turn become depressed. Many things that people persue are often materialistic items, such as cars or the latest smartphones. Working hard in persuing these things to the point of becoming depressed is just not worth it. In fact they should understand that only when they are contented, would they settle down and truly appreciate what they have. There are many cases where people who are relatively poorer are in fact much happier. They are sastisfied with what they have already own and its their loved ones whom they treasure more. Another weakness of Singaporeans is that we can sometimes be racist and not show respect to other races. No matter what ,we cannot change the fact that we live in a multi-cultured society. Thus we cannot avoid encountering them in our lives and it is only rational to bear with their cultures. Doing otherwise and be rude to them would only make the situation worst. Imagine that someone have to face them everyday and he choose to react
