Due to the country facing the biggest economic crisis since the second world war, Obama and Democratic Party leaders suggested an economic stimulus package to confront the crisis. The nation needed immediate relief and great recovery from the economy downfall. The nation needed a reform to avoid future depressions, due to these being major factors, relief, recovery and reform became Franklin D. Roosevelt's goals when he took the honor as president. The New Deal was a form of authority given to the government to aid help to all classes, groups and sections of our country. The New Deal plan was a form to deliver relief to the unemployed and those in danger of losing farms and homes, it was also set out to recover agriculture and businesses, and reform.
I see the effects that poverty has on many people every day, and always think one day that could be me. Many people every day have to go without certain things people take for granted. Hopefully, the government will step in and put programs into place to re-declare the war on poverty and put an end to poverty for many individuals. If the government does not step in to help by putting programs into place what will happen to the many people who are on the verge of being poverty stricken? Many people are only 1 paycheck away from being considered low income and fewer and fewer people are being considered middle class.
The Second Wave of American Slavery In 1938, Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed into law a minimum wage of $0.25 an hour. This was part of his initiative to lift the United States out of the Great Depression, and provide every American with a livable paycheck. Since then, the minimum wage has increased to account for inflation. However, many Americans are still working full time in poverty. This discouraging figure, along with the prohibitively high cost of a higher education has led to a second wave of slaves in the twenty-first century.
In 1960, 40 million people of the American population were considered to be living in poverty out of the 176 million citizens in the United States. This staggering number was one of the facts that Michael Harrington revealed in his book The Other America (Meyerson). The book The Other America by Michael Harrington was significant in American History because it changed American society by exposing the amount of people in poverty in America and depicted their their lives in the poor urban ghettos to the middle and upper classes of society. The book made the impoverished Americans visible to the upper classes in American society and was attributed to dropping the poverty rate in America as the novel influenced Lyndon Johnson’s “War against Poverty.” In context, American college students were challenging the old ideas of how to make money. They protested against consumerism, materialism, and mania.

Reducing Poverty In America Delmar A Bennett Buffalo State College Abstract In this essay I will briefly demonstrate how poverty impacts the United States. My main focus is to discuss the reasons behind poverty in the States. After gathering research I came to the conclusion that poverty arises due to the lack of education. The United States is in an era were poverty is becoming a big epic. We live in the richest nation yet nearly 49 million of Americans struggle to put food on their table.
Generational poverty usually passes on the lack of motivation, money and education from one generation to the other. Children affect by poverty usually don’t receive quality education as well as healthcare. There are many families solely but incorrectly depended on welfare for their source of income. We can think of several ways to break this cycle. One way is to get something to do for income.
About 1.7 billion people live in absolute poverty. Relative poverty is the condition of having fewer resources or less income than others within a society or country, or compared to worldwide averages. Dictionary.com has described poverty as the state or condition of having little or no money, goods, or means of support; condition of being poor; indigence. About 25,000 people die every day of hunger or hunger-related causes, according to the United Nations. As a group we have concluded that a person is consider in poverty when they cannot afford the basic necessities of life including: food, shelter, drinking water, and clothes.
\The Rise of Hunger at the Los Angeles County Area Though it is a sad truth, U.S. citizens in the Los Angeles County are not being ale to eat, causing hunger. Author Alexandra Zavis's article from LA Times, “Hunger touches more than 1.7 million in Los Angeles.” Zavis had claimed that definite amount of people cannot afford to feed themselves or their kids. Study that found, most people are struggling and cannot offer plentiful food for a healthy lifestyle for all the household members because of the qualifications of getting federal nutrition welfares. Zavis says more than half of Californians do not qualify for food stamps by the low income families that argue to what they can make on the end of the days, one of the examples Zavis explains
Poverty is an important issue to take notice of. Many people in the United States fall within the life status of living in poverty. Just as adults are affected by poverty so are the youth. Since the youth is the future of the country they call America, it’s critical that the children do not grow up in a horrific environment. Poverty could be simply defined as being economically poor but many researchers like to refer to it as the state of having little or no money and few or no material possessions.
