Myrtle Wilson is ashamed of her social position in life because she is poor. First off, when she is with Tom, (which is wrong in the first place) she is lifted of her under-class blemishes, even though Tom has abused her. When Tom and Nick go into town to the apartment party, Nick states, “Making a short deft movement, Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand”(37). It is never okay no matter what situation a person is in to hit a woman. Tom is so arrogant that he thinks he can do whatever he wants.

Observers in the town remark how the once-beautiful Delia has lost her shine because of her abusive husband. A practical joker, Sykes scares Delia fifteen years by using her fear of snakes. Delia has come to the conclusion that she does not need Sykes nor his abuse, particularly considering it is her wages that paid for their home. Sykes is a stereotypical abusive husband. He physically and mentally abuses Delia, takes her income while failing to make his own, and has an affair on the side.
Dana is terrified because that was the house she was supposed to go to. The white men horribly beat the men for not having papers stating he was free. Dana is disgusted because the beating is so horrifying she has never seen anything like it because she was born in different times. After taking a few hits at the women the men ride off taking the black man with them back towards Rufus’ home. She thinks the man was most likely a slave of Rufus’ farther who had runaway.
He is complicit in Dwight’s attempt to lure Rosemary; he finds that they are too deeply entwined to stop the prevent carnage. Dwight’s attempts to “improve” Toby and turn him into a “man”, highlight the extreme vulnerability and sense of powerlessness that pervade many of the surrogate father figures in the novel. Dwight constantly sets him up for ridicule. For example, he makes him “shuck” horse chestnuts without gloves, which is an incredibly difficult task. His fingers become covered with a yellow stain and people think that he is hygienically unclean.

On chapter eight, she hits a girl called Carly because she called Josie a ‘wog’. Since Carly’s dad was out of control, Josie calls her dad to defend herself since he is a barrister. This definitely makes the barbeque event pretty useless since both of them have broken their promise to keep out of each other’s lives. The eighth chapter gave us an idea that the barbeque even is useless between families; even though Michael has fled eighteen years ago. This event gives us another idea that we have no one better to rely on, than your family.
Also when Proctor talks to Abigal alone and tells her that they will no longer have an affair. “I still wait for you to come back John...(Abigal)…”those days are long over and will never happen again(Proctor)” (miller 192). In the first Act John Proctor has a very troubled past and is feels very guilty for it and these quotes show it. In Act Tree proctor starts to change into a more protective husband. Trying to show off all of his possessions didn't impress her, but made her feel sad.
