The Stokowski Legacy The Philadelphia Orchestra is a symphony orchestra based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The orchestra has a number of media firsts. It was the first symphony orchestra to make electrical recordings. The orchestra was the first to make a commercially sponsored radio broadcast and to appear on a national television broadcast. The Philadelphia Orchestra was the first major orchestra to give a live cybercast of a concert and was also the first to offer downloads of music from their website. The orchestra was founded by Fritz Scheel, the first conductor, in 1900. Since their founding there have been through eight music directors. Karl Pohlig served as music director from 1907 to 1912. Leopold Stokowski became music director in 1912. He is the one who brought the orchestra to national prominence. Under him, the orchestra gained a reputation for brilliance, and developed what is known as the “Philadelphia Sound.” Stokowski left the orchestra in 1941. In 1938 Eugene Ormandy became the principal conductor. He remained with the orchestra for a total of 44 years. Ormandy is the conductor that took the orchestra on the famous tour of the People’s Republic of China in 1973. In June 2010 Yannick Nézet-Séguin was named the eighth music director of the orchestra for the current, 2012 to 2013 season. The conductor for the November 10, 2012 concert was Emmanuel Krivine. Krivine first conducted with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Mann Center for the Performing Arts in June 2001.
