Most of us have been there, the hectic flight scene; children crying and screaming, impatient passengers demanding their due service and the obnoxious attitude of the man seated beside you, would you be able to keep a level head and a smile on your face while having to keep this flight under control? A Flight Attendant, or Stewardess, can. The job of a Stewardess is conducted during flights, mainly on commercial airlines. The primary job of a Stewardess is to ensure passenger safety. Before each flight, a Stewardess must attend a safety briefing with the pilots and the leading Flight Attendant. During this briefing, everyone involved in conducting the flight overview safety and emergency checklists, the postions and variation of emergency equipment and other specific features to the plane type. Stewardesses are responsible for the welfare of certain passengers, and are tasked to take care of specific passengers accordingly, such as special needs passengers, unaccompanied traveling small children or V.I.P.'s. They make sure those sitting in emergency exit rows are willing and physically able to assist in an emergency evacuation and move those who are unable to carry out the responsiblity into another seat. Prior to each flight, a safety check is conducted by Stewardesses to ensure all emergency equipment, such as life vests, flashlights and firefighting equipment are all on board, in the proper quantity and condition. They assist with the loading of carry-on baggage, checking for weight, size and questionable/dangerous goods. In addition to loading carry-on luggage, they are charged with reporting unserviceable or missing items before takeoff. They then must perform a safety demonstration in front of the seated passengers.
