Stereotyping effecting group relationships Grouping is when you are putting people in a group based on race, religion or sex. Stereotyping is judging someone within the group for their appearance or actions associated with the group. How can stereotyping effect group relations? A person could be stereotyped simply by someone presuming that an individual has family characteristics due to his and her obvious characteristics. We have the tendencies to presume that the individual is a brat because their parents are wealthy, or someone with blond hair is dumb because of her hair color. Stereotyping can make people shallow and not look past their own noses. In some cases females do not give other females the time of day because of the clothes that that they wear, they assume by the way they are dressed they are unintelligent or a prostitute. The majority of the time when we stereotype individuals, we do not think that the individual might be a pleasant and caring person. We tend to believe what we think about someone rather than getting to know who the individual really is. These actions can trigger hostility with in a group, and could also cause inappropriate thoughts to arise because you dislike someone just because they have been stereotyped. An example of a stereotype you find in your everyday life. Stereotyping is done by almost everyone, there are many that we all see in our everyday life. For example, if we know someone is on welfare, we tend to think they are lazy and don't care. When we see poor people, we say they deserve their life because they are lazy and don't try hard enough, and we say homeless people are addicts/alcoholics, but in reality most people in the US are one paycheck from disaster. Really, we as a hole need to stop and think, when we see poor, homeless or people receiving government assistance that could be us, and they
