Running head: MATRIX COMPARISON: WORKPLACE BULLYING 1 Matrix Comparison: Workplace Bullying Fabian Solano Carrillo Grand Canyon University MATRIX COMPARISON: WORKPLACE BULLYING 2 Matrix Comparison: Workplace Bullying Bullying is defined as the evolving process in which an individual finds themselves in an inferior position and becomes the target of systematic negative social acts by one or more perpetrators (Hauge, Skogstad, & Einarsen, 2009). Bullying can take many forms, from gossiping and social exclusion, to more extreme forms such as physical violence. In time, this phenomenon leads to psychological damage in which an individual begins to feel a sense of worthlessness, leading to retaliation that is deemed justified by
Appendix B Part I: Define the following terms Stereotypes A stereotype is a generalization of a particular group based upon race, ethnicity, gender, or religious beliefs. Prejudice Prejudice is an unfavorable opinion or idea about a certain group of people. An opinion or idea that is resistant to change. Labeling Theory Labeling theory is a social theory which suggests that the reactions of society to certain behaviors plays a major role in defining or “labeling” people a certain way. For example, people get labeled as deviant based on certain behaviors (thief, prostitute, homosexual) and often begin to perform that role based on their “label”.
Stereotypes lead people to expect certain actions from members of social groups. These stereotype-based expectations may lead to self-fulfilling prophecies, in which one's inaccurate expectations about a person's behavior, through social interaction, prompts that person to act in stereotype-consistent ways, thus confirming one's erroneous expectations and validating the stereotype. (Page 94–97) Often time’s people are fairly ignorant of the customs and
Problem Statement The problem, in this case, stemmed from declining department sales and inappropriate business practices that created unpleasant work conditions and significant reductions in employee productivity. There was poor communication between management and employees and the tally system incentivized individual goals rather than the group goal. This methodology caused
What this does is show the employees that they do not have a set code of conduct to follow. A system such as the one in place can discourage those employees that strive for excellence on the job. A new system is in order here. Employees that receive a poor performance evaluation should be put on probation immediately. The next step should be for the supervisor to ask questions and try to develop a good rapport with the employee to see what is going on in their personal lives.
CT279: Understanding Sensory Loss. 1, 1, There are a number of factors that can impact individuals with sensory loss, communication and awareness plays a big role in this, they may also find it difficult to feed themselves, dressing, mobility, hobbies and interests can have a major negative impact on their lives. They could also feel scared and alone. There can also be positive factors that could impact on individuals lives, increased help, aids for support and a good support team could give them a better outlook on life. 1, 2, Societal attitudes and beliefs can impact individuals with sensory loss in quite a negative way because people in society can be very judgmental towards people with disabilities, and put them in a group of people with below average intelligence and assume they can’t do or think the same way as other people without disabilities can.
Prejudices and stereotyping can influence attitudinal barriers, for example, a disabled person in a work environment may be acted against by even the most well meaning of their colleagues, as they might feel pity or feel sorry for them, making a disabled person feel put down and inferior, meaning they don’t work up to their full potential and empower them to having full independence. A stereotype is based on an assumption that generalises a group of people as a whole, that they all have the same characteristics, as opposed to being individuals. This can influence attitudinal barriers because people may act towards certain people in a way that isn’t necessary and could be seen and offensive. The disabled may be discriminated against because people assume that they are unable to speak for themselves, taking away their right to speech. Geographical Barriers A geographical barrier is if a person lives in a rural area and is not able to drive, and there is no transport, preventing them from getting to the destination they need.
Third was the need for me to know not only that there was a dissatisfaction with my work performance, but, also that there would be consequences that affected my job. What transpired in this example is one of the barriers of communication – Silence. The employment agency assumed that no news was good news. We see that this was not the case. In reality, ‘silence and information withheld are both common and problematic.’ (Robbins & Judge, pg
This is a potential effect of discrimination because they may feel that they have had enough of being discriminated and become aggressive towards the person who is discriminating against them. When a person has negative behaviours because of discrimination they may feel angry and feel that everyone is being discriminative towards them and may feel that they need to do something to stop people from discriminating them. For example in the questionnaires I collected my information from a person was discriminated about their race in a setting which made them upset and angry so they became violent and aggressive towards the person that was discriminating them. This is a clear example of negative behaviours. Low self esteem Low self-esteem is when a person is pushed out and feels unwanted.
Why do people label and group other people? We label and group other people in order to give them a distinct identity in the society we are in. I believe we label them or mentally sort them into a certain group so that we know how to act around them. It's something most people do automatically to simplify their social interactions. Labeling and grouping other people usually only becomes a problem when we label and group someone incorrectly in a negative manner, which is what most of us associate stereotypes with.
