The first action that Company Q could take to improve its attitude toward social responsibility would be to donate the outdated food to the local food bank. All the food that goes to waste in the dumpster is just going to a landfill and will not be used for human consumption. It is not socially responsible to create more waste when the outdated food can be used and consumed to help those who are in need. The company states that they are worried about employees taking food and claiming that the food is a donation. If Company Q is worried about this happening with employees, they could only allow owners or store managers to decide what is donated.
C. reduce lost sales to health food stores. D. save the environment. E. offset cost-based pricing pressure. Answer Key: B Question 5 of 10 10.0/ 10.0 Points Which of the following is not one of the four overarching strategies to create and deliver value and to develop sustainable competitive advantages? A. Locational excellence B.
Thankfully, Company Q doesn't need to expend much in the way of financial or employee effort to make a considerable difference in our store neighborhood community respect. One delivery van can be used to pick-up the product that would otherwise be thrown away at the end of the workday and transported by the store's supervisor to the local food bank. The food would be unloaded by food bank staff while the Company Q supervisor could discuss with the food bank managers the impact that those donations will have on the community. The marginal time spent loading and travelling to the local food bank is a minor inconvenience for the storeowner at worst and a major public relations benefit for not only the local store but also Company Q in general. We could also expect a reduction in our waste removal services since less product will be thrown
Mantkelow (2014) explains lean manufacturing as based on "finding inefficiencies and removing wasteful steps that don't add value to the end product." Lean operations helps to reduce waste in production by using resources to only produce what the customer is demanding. A company that is using lean operations has measurable throughput. “Every minute that a product is not sold the cost accumulates and the competitive advantage is lost, this is the manufacturing cycle time” (Heizer and Render, 2010) this analysis could have been used to scale down production in the third and fourth quarter when it became obvious there was excess inventory. For starters, there is no value in holding 60 days' worth of inventory, to adopting lean principles would immediately help us to commit to inventory reduction and better alignment between production and demand.
Like when I see supermarkets advertising to buy their simple and cute reusable bags and become a “smart shopper” by not wasting plastic bags and have your own reusable bags when you go grocery shopping to help reduce the amount of plastic being wasted. It just sucks to see that the majority of people don’t cope with the project; I’m sadly one of those people. When I go grocery shopping I honestly do not even think about any reusable bags. It just does not click in my mind that it would be better for the environment if I take reusable bags. The day that happens though, I am going to feel so proud of myself.
We all can contribute in helping the slow the growth of “trash Island” so some call it. By making a conscious decision to use less plastic, and recycle or reuse plastics. Here are a couple of suggestions that would help cutting down on the plastic waste. * Carry a travel mug/cup to use rather than getting throw away cups every time you get a drink. * Take your own bags to the store for shopping.
Recycling is the most common thing to think of. Around where I live recycling has been apart of home use for as long as I can remember. Now companies have been “Going Green.” Recycling seems to be the go too idea. But companies can also find ways to cut energy use by using energy efficient light bulbs and products. Finding ways and areas to cut back on.
People will not stop breathing, just like people will not stop using toilet paper because we are accustomed to having it while using the bathroom. To reduce the number of trees being cut down everywhere, people can start looking into using material that recycles itself. For example, using recyclable paper will allow one to use that sheet of paper and recycle it to be used again. Also, Beavan started using only his reusable grocery bag when he shopped (61). This process will not only avoid the cost of buying material over and over again, but also save the trees from being cut down.
A society we must respect those individual rights. As a manager at Kudler Fine Foods, I would expect that employees and customers are respected and recognized individually. My focus would not be on what may be most beneficial to society or the grocery industry in general, but on what is most beneficial to my internal and external customers. For example, some managers may believe that it is a waste of resources to offer free food samples. When looking at the bottom line, this practice takes an employee away from working the register or counter as well as increases the costs associated with providing goods for no profit.
Currently Daniels & Millers website states they are paying 70 cent per pound of aluminum cans [ (Daniels & Miller,Inc., 2011) ]. Scrap metal recycling help reduce the energy spent on producing new materials. Today many items are constructed with recycled metals because metal “does not shed its material composition or its power” [ (Learning about the Scrap Metal Recycling Process) ]. Since the new metal does not have to be processed, this helps save the manufactures money by reducing the costs. Citizens can make money when turning scrap metal.
