John Do Starbucks Case Study 9/30/2011 1.) Starbucks has been concerned about the environment, its employers, suppliers, customers, and its communities. For environment, Starbucks wants to be very active in using environmental friendly products. Starbucks, tries to reduce waste through recycling, and educates partners through the company’s “Green Team.” One thing that has helped Starbucks with this is their environmental website, which customers can go to, and track the company’s progress and setbacks through its shared planet website. For employees, Howard Shultz, Director of retail and marketing operations, wants to have the best work environment for its employers. If you work more than twenty hours a week, then you are eligible for health benefits and to receive stock options. Also, Starbucks focuses in on personal interaction, but focusing on that aspect has gotten Starbucks into trouble with low employee turnover and high productivity (Starbucks spends more money on the health insurance rather than raw materials to brew the coffee). For, suppliers, Starbucks pays coffee farmers premium prices to help them make profits and support their families, involved in social development programs, investing in programs to build schools, health clinics, and other projects that benefit coffee-growing communities. For, customers, Starbucks main focus is customer satisfaction. Starbucks wants to make sure the customer is satisfied so they basically become a customer for life. Also, Starbucks focuses on its productivity by upgrading coffee-brewing machines, introducing new food and drink items for the budget-conscience customers, and refocuses on its core product.
