His gifts were given late at night, so that the gift giver's identity would remain a secret. The Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, and his drawing was used in the first Santa ads for the Coca-Cola Company's Christmas advertising in the 1920s. However, as the years progressed, the Santa advertisement had numerous images by many different artists, including Clement C. Moore's traditional St. Nicholas.

There are people all over the nation who perform different yearly traditions like decorating Christmas trees, being involved in Easter egg hunts and plenty more. People are accustomed and comfortable to yearly rituals. However, in “The Lottery,” the practices they carried out was not likely comfy at all what so ever. Normally most people would associate the lottery with something superior like winning cash money or some type of prize and so forth, but in this particular story it was the complete opposite.

In most cases a lottery would result in a desirable outcome for the winner however, in this story the lottery is more beneficial to those who do not win considering the fact that the winner will be stoned by the rest of the community.
