Every aspect of life has been impacted in some way by computers and sports are no different. Practically every aspect of sports, from how they are played to how they are measured, to how they are viewed, has been forever changed by the computer age. Sports teams and other organizations use computers for statistics, equipment design, performance analysis, video games, and official websites. “Even if you don’t participate in sports yourself , you may have used your computer to buy tickets to sporting events, check out sports schedules, or chat with other sports fans about the latest game” (“Computers and Sports”). Sports fans love statistics. Statistics are the common thread binding the past and the present together. With statistics we measure modern-day athletes to athletes of the past. “The quantity of statistics used in sports is enormous. Without computers, it would be very difficult to keep these statistics up-to-date” (“Computers in Sports”). “Keeping track of that data is another way that computers can be used in sports” (Garcia). Computers make it easy to keep track of player statistics. For example, a coach can create a spreadsheet that holds all the current stats for his team throughout the season. Safety is another important aspect in professional sports. Sports equipment companies have come to “rely heavily on computer aided design, or CAD, to create a vast range of equipment from shoes, to helmets, pads, protective face gear, mouth pieces, balls, and so much more” (Mathew). There has been many concussions in contact sports such as football and hockey over the past couple years. Equipment developers have used computers to develop safer equipment to help reduce those injuries. For example, “helmet company Riddell designed a new football helmet for the NFL during the 2010 season after a number of players were injured by concussions” (Garcia). These
