Sport in Belarus It is no exaggeration to say that cultural progress of society in our time is unthinkable without the progress of physical culture and sport. Our country has reason to be proud of its achievement in this sphere. Of course, the level of the highest sports achievement of a country does not always reflect the development lever of mass sports. During the stagnation period we have all social ills in sports. Every third resident of Belarus practices physical exercises on goes in for sports. Tree million people constitute a huge reserve making it possible to develop practically all kinds of sport. Belarusian athletes have at their disposal 138 stadia, gym hall, football fields, indoor swimming-pools, shooting galleries, outdoor sports grounds. Such sport structures as the Sport Palace, the Track-and-Field Athletics Palace, the Shooting Complex and the Water Sports Palace in Minsk as well as the Republican Equestrian Sports School and the Olympic complexes "Raubichi" and "Staiki" near Minsk have won recognition of both our and foreign athletes. Various competitions are held in the republic practically every day, thanks to which our athletes perfect their skills. The calendar of sports events envisages meets for athletes of all classes and ages. Winter and summer spartakiads are annual events for adults in every city of the republic. More that a thousand foreign athletes come here anally to participate in competitions in Belarusian stadia and sports halls. At the same time, over a thousand Belarusian athletes participate annually in many international events outside the borders of the republic. Belarusian athletes have been successful at competitions of the topmost level. It was in 1952 that the Soviet team participated in the Olympics for the first time. The honour of Soviet sport was upheld then by 7 representatives of Belarus too.
