Speech On Imaginative Journeys

608 Words3 Pages
GOOD MORNING The Elizabethan society relied on the imagination represented in Shakespeare’s play to entertain and to educate them morally. The imaginative journey therefore is the process of opening one’s perceptions of the world around them . While every journey is defined by individual experiences, it is the outcomes that matter. The notion of a journey does not only mean covering a distance from point A to point B which of-course is the physical journey; from time immemorial, life comprises spiritual, imaginative, inner and several other journeys. William Shakespeare’s play, ‘The Tempest’ is a culmination of fantasy endeavouring to entice the audience to speculate into the magical world of Shakespeare’s island. To draw us into his creative work and engage our imagination, the novel opens with a ship in the midst of a chaotic storm at sea. Shakespeare uses nautical jargon and dramatic language like, “Yare, yare! Take in the topsail”, which allows the audiences to be transported through the imaginative journey to this utopic island now disturbed by the raging tempests. This tempest is metaphorically representing the disruption of order on arriving to Prospero’s island. The boatswain shouts, “what cares these roarers for the name of king?” which shows that natural order is overriding human order and the integrity of the king. The storm engages our imagination and therefore sets up the imaginative journey for the audience, positioning them to feel curious as to what hectic and wondrous events are yet to come. Even his daughter Miranda is perplexed as she pleads with her father, ‘‘If by thy art, my dearest father, you have / Put the wild waters in this roar, allay them.’ However it’s not the storm but the outcome of the storm that matters. Prospero’s existentialist involvement with the island is comparable to Chuck Noland’s island in the film
