Many of the items used in cooking today are derived from early Greece and Rome. Three main foodstuffs used now are wine, seasonings, and olives. All three of these items are important to the American diet, whether one is aware of it or not. In fact, they are so important that food today would be nothing like it is without the heavy culinary influence of the Roman and Greek people. Wine was an extremely important element in the Greek and Roman lifestyle, particularly in Greece.
For its part the New World provided a host of sustaining crops that could be cultivated in Europe, such as potatoes, maize (corn), tomatoes, squashes, and varieties of beans; foods that appealed to European tastes, such as cacao (chocolate), avocados, and chilies; and other products that served a growing demand, such as tobacco, indigo, and cotton. Few New World animals of consequence migrated to Europe during this period, but possibly the venereal disease syphilis first reached Europe from the Americas. Before and since the publication of Crosby’s work, students of European expansion have not neglected his factors but have also pointed to the interregional migration of people and their cultures and metals (iron from Europe and silver and gold from the Americas). The student must discuss the impact of the Columbian exchange on the population and economies of Europe. For example, this might include the effects of transferred food crops on diet and population growth in Europe, potatoes and corn as factors in the agricultural revolution, the economic effect of cane sugar and tobacco production on European economies (e.g., wealth produced by the New World plantation systems for Europe, the stimulation that agriculture gave to international commerce and later industrialization, the need for large-scale labor for sugar
Hispanic Influence on Modern US Culture Hispanic immigrants are more prevalent in the U.S., and we have made great mark on it, from colonial times some Latinos existed in this great country. Some from Mexico other from Florida which in that time was a colony of Spain, but in our days I think the greatest influence are in cooking, art, and sports. In addition to the kitchen also in art Latinos have made great contribution as for example in music with famous artists such as Jennifer Lopes, Christina Aguilera, and Mariah Carey at the movies we could also include them, but you have to add to Andy Garcia, Antonio Banderas, Sofia Vergara, and many more that the list would be too big, but these are the most important. Also in the television have an entire institution such as Don Francisco, Cristina, and Selena Gomez as a new generation of Latinos making another contribution to this great country.
Mexican Food is actually based upon old Aztec and Mayan culture. Corn was a popular staple in the native diet and Nixtamal was considered to be a very healthy item. Nixtamal is the treated corn that is used to make masa and hominy. First the corn is cooked and soaked in lime, rinsed and then the hulls may or may not be removed. In 1519, when the first Spanish conquistadors entered the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan, where today Mexico City stands, they found the Aztec emperor Montezuma excessively fond of a drink concocted from vanilla and chocolate, and sweetened with honey.
They were able to produce most of these items due to their large range of labor, from slave farmers to wealthy merchants. But also, some of their products were influenced from other cultures inside the empire, such as olives and wine from the Greeks. Romans also had the advantage of obtaining products such as milk and cheese from their domesticated animals, such as cows and goats. The saying, “all roads did lead to Rome,” is correct in the sense that Rome is located centrally in terms of trade. Having all of these brilliant items in their arsenal was crucial to Roman trade; however, it would mean nothing if they could not get them to their destinations.
