Ezekiel E. Wolf Professor Robertson English 1101, 10:00 a.m. 10 August 2013 Wasted Effort or the Next Step? Space: An endless void; empty at first glance, yet so full of possibilities. Mankind has been reaching for the shiny balls of gas it calls “stars” that illuminate the darkness of our universe since the beginning of time. Many astronomers and other experts agree with the quote that Star Trek lovers are all too familiar with: “Space: the frontier.” They believe that the next step for humanity involves the exploration, and eventually, colonization, of space. Others feel that Star Trek's quotes should be considered the same as the show itself: Fictional and for those with time to waste on naive optimism. The topic of space exploration is very controversial, with one of the most common topics of debate being whether it is a waste, or necessary use, of money. While the economic standpoint of the United States of America continues to loom over its people, the exploration of space is necessary, and therefor an efficient use of funds. Pound for pound, the pro's outweigh the con's of using money for something that seems so out of reach. A valid point on the topic is that the exploration of space is encouraging to young people who have taken an interest in science, and may even encourage some to become interested in science. As stated by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, “Give NASA the money it needs,” and, among other things, “they will inspire students to pursue innovative, ambitious projects”(1). One might argue that inspiration is not an issue and that there are plenty of young people in the field of science. However, that is not the case, as Dr. Astro Teller, and expert on the subject, points out. He states,” I believe that our excitement for, and our focus, on science and technologies is waning at a time when science and technology are becoming the substrate
