Sorry for the loss The short story, Sorry for the Loss, is the text where we meet the chaplain Evie and the young criminal Victor. The story begins in media res when Evie has to tell Victor that his Nan is dead and then the story continue chronologic. Evie is a chaplain who has worked in the prison for over a year even though she doesn’t like to be there. The prisoners feel intimidating and abrasive to her. She doesn’t like all the noise either and she deeply treasures the quiet time before unlock where she can establish a feeling of calmness. She prays a lot in the quiet time and therefore we know that she is religious. Evie tries to behave properly and be nice despite she is working among people who have done some very bad things. The news she has to bring to Victor is the first she has to deliver on her own so she is very nervous. She is nervous that he will get upset and this shows us that she is a loving and caring person. When she sees Victor, she imagines that he is her son. Evie feels sorry for him because he is so young. She also helps to run the ETS – enhanced thinking skills. When she tells Victors about his dead Nan, she is disappointed that she couldn’t break through to Victor and it changes her point of view to Victor that he isn’t showing any emotions. Victor is described as a slight, good-looking boy. He has olive skin, sparkling blue eyes and a big white smile with a glint of gold filling. He has served five years, most of it in a young offender’s institute although he has been there for a long time he is different from the other prisoners - he has a kind look. He seems to be intelligent and spiritually curious. He is a catholic but doesn’t really practice it. When he first sees Evie, he hopes it is because of his application to the SORRY Course. The SORRY Course seems to be some kind of privilege an inmate can earn. Victor's cell is
