Lab: Properties of Soils INTRO: We used garden soil to find out the soil’s texture, water holding capacity, soil permeability as well as the soil’s pH, phosphorous, nitrogen, and potassium level. The lab was useful in figuring out what kind of soil is good for growing certain kinds of plants. EXPERIMENT DESIGN: To figure out the soil’s texture we filled a jar half full of garden soil, filled the jar about halfway with water and added about two ml. of detergent. We then shook the jar until it was well mixed and waited about thirty minutes for the mixture to settle. Once it settled we measured the thickness of each layer of the soil. In the water holding experiment we simply filled a beaker with 100 ml. with garden soil then poured water into the beaker to saturate the soil enough so that there was no air trapped in the dirt. We measured the amount of water we used and calculated the pore space as well as the percentage of pore space. For the Soil Permeability lab we took a piece of filter paper and folded it into a funnel. We then filled the funnel with 40ml of soil and poured 100ml of distilled water into the funnel and allowed it to filter into a beaker for about 10 minutes. Last we recorded the volume of the water that collected into the beaker to see how much water filtered through the soil in order to see how permeable the soil was. For the pH, phosphorous, nitrogen and potassium lab we used the soil test kit to determine the different levels. We filled each comparator with a little soil, distilled water and the powder from the capsule. We shook the comparator until the color of the water changed and recorded the results. DATA: SOIL TEXTURE TABLE SOIL POROSITY TABLE SOIL PERMEABILITY TABLE SOIL pH and NUTRIENTS TABLE ANALYSIS OF RESULTS: From our results, we have discovered that garden soil is mostly made up of silt. Silt is a
