When there is rain the forests holds a lot of rainfall to the soil through roots of plants. The water then sinks deeper in the ground and replenishes the supply of the water table. If there was the removal of these forests then water from rain would flow simply through the soil surface and not be retained. Another effect may be the water from rain will not stay in the soil at all and the process of evaporation would immediately set in therefore not replenishing water table. This would lead to wells drying up.
To summarize what this article talked about it was a study done on the effects of soil degradation and the effects on the vegetation in areas around watering points and normal grazing lands. The study showed that in these ecosystems the overgrazing reduced the ecosystem diversity of plants in poor soils. It also talked about how overgrazing around certain areas can not only destroy the soil but it can also cause the destruction of certain types of species. Overgrazing differs in all areas of the world but it still has a common problem which is that when there is overgrazing no matter what type of environment you are in that environment will be
| Soil Erosion | Tree major practices | Rosa Flores 2/18/2013 | Three major practices that expose soil to erosion and how they can be corrected. Soil erosion is the loss of soil caused by particles being carried away by wind or water. Erosion moves the smaller particles first and hence degrade the soil to a coarser, sandier, stonier texture. The major causes of soil erosion are over-cultivation, overgrazing, and deforestation. They are creating problems to create a more sustainable society but it can be corrected.
People excrete wastes and litter that flow into water systems, and animal habitats, this is slowly polluting water and killing wildlife. And the more the population grows the more wasted were going to produce and cause pollution and damage to the environment. More housing and buildings being built means that were building over were habitats live, the loss of these forests leads to extinction of plants and animals. Also more people means that more goods (like clothes, TVs etc) are wanted, more jobs are needed so more factories are being built witch is affecting out air pollution, which eventually is destroying out atmosphere. Also more food is required so more intensive farming methods are used.
Deforestation results from the removal of trees without sufficient reforestation (the replacement of trees). As a whole, deforestation reduces biodiversity, which is the variation of life forms, and negatively impacts the climate and geography not only in the United States, but also around the world. Some of the problems that need to be acknowledged range from forest fires to the lack of national policies
This study is about the European buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica, L.), which is an invasive shrub to the woodlands of northeastern Illinois. The European buckthorn is detrimental to the environment because the shrub alters the soil properties where it resides, which forces the natural plant inhabitants of northeastern Illinois to adapt to the sudden change in soil properties. Due to the changes in soil properties, many of the natural plant inhabitants die from the high amounts of nitrogen and carbon the European buckthorn puts into the soil. This study was done mainly outside the lab in the woodlands of northeastern Illinois at three different sites, the Lake Avenue Woods, the East Woods in Morton Arboretum, and the Mary Mix McDonald Woods. The
Runoff into streams contaminates the water with animal waste which contains antibiotics and artificial growth hormones that are given to the animals to increase their size and to sustain their health. C. Pollution on soil is another problem that arises from factory farming. 1. Runoff contains high amounts of salts which degrade the soil and can contribute to
Since their is a loss of trees when it rains, their is nothing to stop the rain, and so it quickly moves down hill and affects the soil since the nutrients are all being washed down, and it will be faster to cause floods. This issue is causing Haiti to be hit by storms harder then they should. Like the tropical storm of Jeanne, that hit the north, and the four storms that hit in between August, and September. The affects of these storms could have easily been reduced if the forests were still there. Another big effect of deforestation is the fact that it causes soil erosion.
Succession and Natural Selection Student: University: Ecosystem-Succession Animation Succession is the gradual change of species inhabiting an ecosystem due to environmental or edaphic factors. The succession animation ecosystem depicts a form of secondary succession, supported by the fact that: i. Existence of soils that supported the forest vegetation (primary succession occurs in areas in which originally there was no soil) ii. There was a presence of pre-existing forest vegetation, after which a series of events occurred; damming the stream which resulted in the area becoming flooded, and hence creation of a pond. The roots became waterlogged; an unsuitable condition for the trees and death resulted.
With the destruction of the rain forest, climate started changing. With less rain forest, there is less rain resulting in less water for the crops thus causing a drought. How does this cause a drought? The destruction of groundcover can lead to a change in local temperature. “Without trees, erosion would have worsened, carrying away fertile topsoil.
