Functionalism has received criticism for neglecting the negative functions of an event, such as divorce. Functionalism does not encourage people to take an active role in changing their social environment, even when such change may benefit them. Instead, functionalism sees active social change as undesirable because the various parts of society will compensate naturally for any problems that may arise. The founder of the functionalist theory is Emile Durkheim. This theory can also be known as the consensus theory; society can also
Functionalism is based on the view that society is a system of interdependent parts held together by a shared culture or value consensus. Item A says, "while the family can provide young people with basic values and some useful practical skills." Functionalists believe that families socialise their children and teach them the values and norms of society and the item supports this as it talks about the family providing values. However, the item goes on to say,"it cannot equip individuals with everything they need in order to become fully functioning members of a large-scale society". This supports the functionalist view that the education system prepares young people for their future work roles.
Nevertheless, her conclusion is balanced. We want kids who can benefit from both of these approaches to family life. They can socialize in their communities, and connect to kin, but at the same time all children must master the social skills so as to be equipped for the future. Lareau characterizes the behaviors of working class and poor families as “sustaining of natural growth.” Among the benefits of the “natural growth” approach are important social skills including self-organization of time, ability to hang-out in a neighborhood in interesting and enjoyable ways, and knowing how to be unobtrusive around adults. While these skills are valuable, they do not align with the skills, attitudes, and behaviors valued in schools.
So, oppressed people can not win the respect of oppressor. He believes in this way the oppressed become as evil as the oppressor because acquiescence is the easier way to encounter oppression, also it is not the moral way. In Dr. King’s opinion, the second way is resorting to physical violence and corroding hatred. He believes violence not only brings impermanent results, but also is impractical and immoral. According to King, it is impractical because it slows the process of ending the oppression for all, and it is immoral because it seeks humiliate the opponent rather than win his understanding.
For example, society works best when everyone ‘plays’ their part. This is a continuous cycle. An example of this is when the government provides education for the children. The parents of these children need to pay tax to the government to allow their government to be able to run schools. The family in turn will rely on the educated child to grow up and have a good job, so that when they have their own children they are able to pay taxes towards their children’s education and so on.
They are there to assist children on how to act appropriately on ideas they form themselves. He states, “Every teacher should realize the dignity of his calling; that he is a social servant set apart for the maintenance of proper social order and the securing of the right social growth.” He believed that the teacher should become a partner in the learning process. He states, “The teacher is not in the school to impose certain ideas or to form certain habits in the child, but is there as a member of the community to select the influences which shall affect the child and to assist him in properly responding to these influences.” Teachers need to be aware of and never suppress a student’s interests. Item 2B “For functionalist sociologists, the family is an important institution in society. They see the family as having a number of roles essential to the smooth running of society. For example, the family is seen as key to socialising children into the norms and values of society. Other sociologists argue that the functionalist view is too uncritical and ignores the conflict that takes place within the family.” For functionalist sociologists the family is an important institution in the modern day society. Functionalists like Murdock, Parsons and Fletcher see the family as having a number of essential roles to give a ‘smooth running society.’ George Murdock, a functionalist, looked at 250 societies in the US.
Common sense is such a simple concept but when it comes to a defining it, it’s difficult to explain. The Cambridge Dictionary defines it as ‘the basic level of practical knowledge and judgement that we all need to help us live in a reasonable and safe way’. This meaning it’s a presumption we all have and principle we all share and what we just know as the norm. Social change can be very slow with this theory because it is hard to change what people have known and been preconditioned to believe and to know as
We seem to lower our standards because we think they are not academically competitive and thus discourage the concept of achievement. Gonzalez urges educators to be aware of cultural issues to truly understand a student’s background. Educators must think and see beyond the “boxes” of ethnicity, race, and nationality and begin to realize a student’s values within his or her everyday practices and their
But is this always true? The theory ignore any relationship have humans emotion. When people do a decision is not completely depend on the rational thinking to understand what benefit is for their selves or what harmful is for their selves. Social exchange also can use in the school. In our classroom, teacher teach knowledge for students, students and their family
