To look at the definition of abnormality in more detail it’s needed to look at the different definitions of abnormality. There have been four attempts to explain abnormality these are: Statistical Infrequency Deviation from social norms Failure to function adequately Deviation from ideal-mental health I will look at two of these definitions in more detail, to establish the strengths and weakness of these definitions. (psychology.about.com) Deviation from social norms: A social norm is the guidelines that society sets for acceptable behaviour. Behaviour that deviates from these norms is considered to be abnormal. In our society we have acceptable behaviours, values and beliefs.
Conclusion -> draw together main ideas/arguments An outsider does not fit into society and they will do what they see to be right. Although the legal system is meant to be fair, it is only fair to society. If some one is different society tries to outcast them. More often than not, justice does not reach as far as the outsider. Justice is what is seen to be right and just by society and this means that society is catered for.
Sociologists would argued that commonsense thinking is too accepting and uncritical of much that goes around us, they limit too see the world not from any other point of view but their own. Different people will have different perspectives of
In Teirsias’s mind he would probably say they were all good people because when they did something wrong they tried to fix it. I don’t see it that way and that’s just me people see things different. You can chose whether to think they are good or bad
People also have the ability to think morally for themselves so morality is relative to someone’s point of view. The main point favoring the cultural relativism argument is that if there are no moral principles, then the principles can only be relative to culture. If someone were to express their opinion about the morals of a culture that they didn’t agree with, including what the culture already believed to be right, then that person would lose the argument without any question. This can be easily disproved because in one culture, not every person is going to have the same moral judgments about what is right or wrong and people can establish objective moral principles. A culture also can’t think of them as having the power to decide which is right and
CRIME AND DEVIANCE Deviancy is any behaviour that defies the norms of a particular social group. It is anti-social behaviour/or non-normative behaviour or behaviour that does not conform to societal expectations. Definition: American sociologists Marshall Clinard cited in Haralambos and Holborn (1995:387) defines deviancy as, “Any behaviour that is in a disapproved direction and of a sufficient degree to exceed the tolerance limit of that community. This definition has been criticised for ignoring those forms of deviancy which are tolerable. - Deviancy should be viewed as arelative act i.e.
All of these reactions to Gawain’s sin are logical according to their point of view. The most appropriate reaction is that of the Green Knights, his reactioj wasn’t too mean, but it also wasn’t as forgiving as the courts. The court takes this sin too lightly while Gawain really reacts to it badly. Gawain should have just calmed down a little bit, and not have gotten too mad. The Green Knight takes the sin the best because of his mediocre response, not to harsh, and not too
In addition, and partly as a result, they fail to understand the relationship between sociology and phenomenology. However, if we go back to Edmund Husserl's original formulation of the relationship, we once again face serious
Importance of Social Bonds By definition exhibiting a behavior that breaks a norm, or rule, placed upon you by society, your situation, or those around you, is deviant. The same behavior could be considered deviant for one person and not another. It depends upon the person in the situation, when and where it’s taking place, and those around who know what’s happening. There are two major viewpoints of deviance, each having many theories to explain it. The humanist approach doesn’t describe deviance as a behavior, rather defining it by the reaction and it being a subjective experience.
Differences between sociology and common sense: 1. Common sense views are based on people’s immediate and often limited experiences. This leads to a distorted view of reality. Hence common sense knowledge is statement of the obvious which is simply based of assumption. Sociological views are based on rigorous research and therefore evidence based.
