According to Sociology in Modules, Deviance is exhibiting behavior that violates the standards of conduct or expectations of a group or society. In other words, it violates a groups social norms. There are many different theories that explains deviance, but the one the i believe best explains deviance is, the labeling perspective of deviance. The labeling theory is also called the societal-reation approach which is the response to an act, not the act itself, that determines deviance. However, the Saints were never arrested and all of the Roughnecks were because of their labels. The Saints did the same things as the roughnecks, but because their label was one of respectability, they were not viewed as deviant. The roughnecks were viewed as deviant because their labels were ones of no respectability and only trouble and suspicious behavior.
