Socializing on the Social Web David P. Ashford University INF 103 Introduction The way we communicate, socialize, and share information is vastly different today than it was years ago. We utilize computers, phones, tablets, and other electronic devices to access the internet, where we can do a multitude of different things. As will be demonstrated, the advent of the social web has changed our culture today and going forward. The social web has become a platform to perform many of the tasks of yesteryear without even leaving our home or office. It has completely redefined the way we communicate. The social web and the internet are so broad and vast that this paper will only skim the surface of all that can be done. Socializing in the Past Remember the days when we used to bring our pictures in a photo album to share with friends and family? We would take pictures with a camera, take the film to a store, wait for it to be developed, and put the pictures in a photo album. From there we would have to get together with the individuals with whom we wanted to share the photos with. What if we wanted to share the photos with someone who lived 1000 miles away? That used to be such a big deal. We would have to wait until we were face to face with this person until we could share our photos. This could mean weeks, months, years, or never depending on the circumstances. The telephone used to be our primary means for communication. Most American homes were equipped with a land line telephone. When the phone rang, there was no way to tell who was calling. You had to answer the call to find out. When the phone was in use, no one else could use it. This seems inconvenient but at the time it was all that was available. Another means of communicating in the past was a written letter delivered by mail. Sending a letter across the country could take days or weeks to get to
