Healing the World: Making a Difference One Person at a Time Charlotte Richards Southeastern Louisiana University Abstract This paper explores the values in my life and how they correspond to those in the social work profession and to the code of ethics of the National Association of Social Work(NASW). My religion was a big part of my life growing up and certain events that have occurred due to my religious upbringing that have helped me outline my future and goals that correlate to my values. These values are concordant with that of the values of social work and the NASW Code of Ethics. Upon graduating college, I would love to join the Peace Corps and return after my service to go to graduate school and eventually works for the child welfare system. My personal and professional values are congruent to that of social work and the NASW code ethics. I am an honest, caring and just person. Working in a rural community as a social worker might be difficult in the sense that maintaining a professional relationship and avoiding a dual relationship with clients is significantly harder than it might be an urban area. I was raised in the Greek Orthodox religion and my church was close knit group of people that were always there for one another and the sense of community within a society was instilled at me at a young age. The societal belief system I identified with at this time in my life was Judeo-Christian. When I was 13 I went on a mission trip with my priest and a dozen or so fellow parishioners to Mexico and we stayed in an orphanage for eight days and built a house for a family nearby.
