There are many reasons to worry about it. This social media is hurting our society in such way that it causing harm to one’s privacy, it disseminates misinformation, and effect on student’s grade. It is clear that social media is hurting our society by putting one’s privacy and security at risk. In the article “Teens Privacy Is Threatened by Social Networking” author Peter Bazalgette said, “Can you truly delete entries from social networking sites with the confidence they no longer exist on a server somewhere? You cannot” (Bazalgette p.1).
It has caused countless arguments, cyber bullying, people committing suicide and horrible images and videos being uploaded for the world to see. This simple site is actually very complex. People tend to think its a great way to make friends and reconnect with old ones, but in my opinion is a way of causing stress and anxiety in someones life. Often people use it to cause upset and insult someone from the comfort of behind their computer screen. The problem with Facebook is that it often puts people in bad situations often leading to suicide, self harm, low self-esteem, being harmed by a predator and not being hired by a company.
She also writes some about politicians and the Juvenile Justice system. Sternheimer points to other possible reasons for the violent acts of the youth such as, the home life. While it may be that juvenile crimes have declined and personal backgrounds effect actions, it cannot be said this proves video game violence has no effect on youth. Sternheimer begins by explaining how video games violence has become a “folk devil” (204) to explain unexplainable happenings of youth shootings and this is just the one to follow the many other explanations the media and politicians have given for problem youth. She then brings up the issue of unnerving newspaper headlines such as “Bloodlust Video Games Put Kids in the Crosshairs” (205).
Modest Proposal Cyber bullying is an issue seen nationwide that is dangerously overlooked. Cyber bullying takes place over social networks such as Facebook and Twitter and over text messaging. Bullies are known to go after a group or person with “lower power”. There has been a rise in cyber bullying over the past few years and not nearly enough precautions are being taken to prevent this issue. Cyber bullying is legally defined as actions that use information and communication technologies to support deliberate, repeated, and hostile behavior by an individual or group that is intended to harm another or others.
When children start to abuse the convenience of the internet by harassing other people, the internet becomes very dangerous. What makes cyber bullying so dangerous? Cyber bullying is dangerous because it has the ability to take the smallest incident and build up so much tension around it that it results in a murder or suicide. Some people may blame the victim for lacking self control and not being able to ignore the situation. Some people may claim it was just a joke and may blame the victim for being too sensitive or insecure.
Being victimized also increases their chances of harassing peers online themselves. The research also revealed that 68 percent of cyberbullying victims spoke up about their harassment to friends, parents or other authority figures. (Michele L. Ybarra, 2006
In a sense, Pitts is showing concern for the future generations, and how they would live their lives. At the rate that technology and social media is affecting us now, how would people be able to physically communicate? Will society be undermined to a status of physical solitude, where one tweets the “exciting” life they are having to others that he or she cannot even recognize the faces of? In the horrifying context (the shooting itself and social media’s part in it) of the shooting of Justin Valdez, Pitts fully demonstrates the unintentional yet detrimental effects of social media on the general public, thus partially refuting a commonly believed idea that social media is designed to allow people to stay well connected to one
Sidonia Willis Mr. Lewis Engl. 1301-018 14 October 2014 The Not-So-Social Life Many social networks have created the opportunity for people to communicate almost instantly over almost any distance. Social network’s uses have become more popular and have created a whole new world of its own. The author Brian Jung’s essay “ The Negative Effects of Social Media on Society and Individuals” expresses the problems that social media is creating today. A lot of illegal programmes inside computers gather information about, for instance, web sites that we have visited, information that we have searched and they send this information to organisations that use these data to understand our preferences in terms of our political idea or our sexual preference. Consequently, our freedom is threatened by these organisations and people have fought for years and even dead to obtain it. In conclusion, I do not want to spread fear towards who is about to use this incredible mean of communication but I wanted to make you aware of dangers that is possible to meet in this “virtual world”. Also because we can receive a lot of damages by our unconscious behaviour and not only in terms of money. Knowing exactly what we do can help us to avoid problems and perhaps regret something that we have done for a long time.
The number of Facebook users is twice more than the USA population and over 5 million of them are under 10 years; every second, a video on YouTube is uploaded; Facebook users spent 1.85 billion dollars on virtual credits last year (Frankenberry, A. 2016). All these large numbers are proof of the fact that social media has taken its place in our lives and eventually influence us. Therefore, People should be more aware of the negative effects of social media on adolescents, on health, and on society. The first reason why people should be more aware of their use of social media is because it affects adolescents in different ways.
