Whether it be telling a parent where you will be for the night or telling your friend how super upset you are because that one guy just won’t notice you. There are other circumstances, however, where conflict can arise due to the simple lack thereof tone in a text. Although it tends to be quick and simple, social media, in many ways, is sabotaging real communication. To start off, what is social media? Well, according to dictionary.com, it involves websites and other online means of communication that are used by large groups of people to share information and to develop social and professional contacts. Professional…. Wow, some word choice. Facebook seems to be everything but professional these days. So with the definition explained, how could social media be sabotaging communication? The explanation is quite simple actually, teenagers. Teenagers, especially of the female gender, seem to endorse themselves into the world that is social media. This ranges everywhere from selfies, to status updates, personal information and all those props that go with the social world. One common miscommunication that is made is when two people, who are not related, say they are related. For example, two girls who are best friends confirm themselves as sisters on Facebook. Now, as everyone else sees it, they are sisters, but in reality, nothing more than friends. This is a simple, yet effective sign of miscommunication. Another, and possibly the biggest factor, is the lack of tone in text. Without tone, words can be taken in so many ways. Without tone, it is hard to detect some feelings, such as sorrow, sarcasm, frustration, and even depression. There is ways to express it however, such as through emoticons, capital
