Outline and explain two ways in which ethnic identities are created and reinforced. (16 marks) Ethnic identities are created and reinforced by both primary and secondary socialisation. The family is the most important agent of primary socialisation; this is when an individual first learns about their ethnic heritage. Modood (2005) describes this process as the first time we become aware of our ethnic culture through food, language, dress, rituals and traditions. Miri Song’s study on British Chinese found that Chinese parents were very influential in reinforcing Chinese values by positively sanctioning children who choose to help out in the family business.
That day when the women came to speak, and class was over, I put myself in her shoes see what she went thru; it is hard to try to talk over like 30 kids in one room. I felted so bad I wanted to apologize to the woman but I was too late. I was paying attention; I wanted to tell her that I am sorry for how my classmates acted with no self-control. That we mad the LPP program have a bad name. I bet now she does not want to come back because of our behavior, and the way we acted like
I was came across one old high school friend and asked them why I always have to be the one to find out how she’s doing. She gave me the same answer most people give “I’ve been busy.” I then wrote “I see why you don’t have that many friends left.” I acted as an ego buster because I made her feel bad about herself. I was aware that it would make her feel bad in some way but I never really paid attention to the fact that it would affect her ego in a negative way. Part 5 Ego boosters and Ego busters play a major role in shaping the self-concept. Humans learn who they are and how to act by feedback from the peer group and significant others.
I started to become the center of all the girl drama that went around. And it seemed like I was in the counselor’s office regularly to get an update to see how I was doing. My lack of self confidence and the trouble in high school reflected my attitude towards my education. I was never confident when it came to projects, assignments, or class work. It felt like my peers were better than me because it seemed like they put a lot of thought and input into their school works while I felt like I turned in something worthless.
It is evident that Tan’s mother is considered by the society as inferior because of her broken English. Even her daughter was first ashamed of her due to the fact that she cannot speak good English that is understood by many people in the society. However, the significance of “Mother Tongue” in our lives is the overriding theme in the article. From the beginning, Tan struggles with her two different worlds. Being born in China but living in America, she seems ashamed of her roots and that is why she is embarrassed when her mother speaks broken English (Tan 142-146).
Empowering Students In the essay “Why Are Students Turned Off,” by Casey Banas, she tells us about a teacher named Ellen Glanz who pretends to be a student and sit on a few classes. Glanz found out while sitting in on these classes that they were manipulative and boring. She found students were doing little as possible to pass and get good grades. Found that the students even use poor excuses to avoid assignments. Ellen Glanz concluded that many students are turned off because they have little power and responsibility over their own education.
When we are eating no teachers are around us giving us more lessons. Is it really going to hurt someone texting at lunch? You think that would be an appropriate time, but its not. Or during passing periods we had five minutes to get to class to class. I know for some students it doesn't take that long to get to class unless talking with your friends which is the biggest thing.
After the incident Melinda stopped talking completely, and caring about her appearance. To keep herself from talking when she wanted to say something, she would bite her lower lip. This caused cuts and scabs on her mouth, but nearing the end of her freshmen year she gained trust towards Mr. Freeman, her art teacher. She started talking to him, and at the very end she opens up to him, and tells him about the incident. But she didn’t also trust Mr.
The grad student felt very sadden about the experiment and she put an premature end to the study. In Stanley Milgrams experiment he found that people are surprisingly likely to follow the directions not only of legitimate authority figures but also of groups of ordinary individuals, even when it
After a couple of trips to the Principal’s office, he was successful! Scared and excited at the same time, I was escorted by Mr. Good to my new class. To my horror, I was greeted with facial distortions, which made it crystal clear, that the new teacher was not happy. “Did I do something wrong?”She hurried me into her class, and with an angry tone, ordered me to sit in a vacant seat, while she continued arguing with Mr. Good. In the distance, straining my ear, I could hear her questioning my academic ability and she claimed that in fact I seemed not to be bright at all.
