Social/Emotional Development in Toddlers… Age 1 • Temper Tantrums • Hard time sharing: “No”, “Mine”, start to understand they are individuals on their own. • Try to be independent • Can’t remember rules • Rapid mood shifts • Show increasing fears • Very Egocentric Age 1 ctd. • Parallel Play, or Independent Play • Routines are very comfortable • Ask for parents a lot • Increasingly more self-aware • Express new emotions (jealousy, affection, pride, etc.) but have problems controlling them: “what they want to happen should happen”. They are the director of their own lives, and adults are just the supporting role on the side. • Separation Anxiety: during 2nd year, the protest may become strong at day care, since they anticipate parents departure. • Attachment to comfort object begins Age 2 • Love to assert themselves with “NO” • Imitate adults/parents • Want to help with household tasks, or other tasks adults do • Start more complex pretend play • Fantasy play= short and simple for now • Do opposite of what is asked • Still egocentric and have hard time sharing • Like Parallel Play: important to have short 1 hour play dates with developing friends • Refuse to help sometimes • More sure of themselves than 1 year olds • Become frustrated easily • Still need security to feel comfortable and safe • Start to explore even more • Attachment to comfort object Age 3 • A lot of emotional/social nourishment comes from play with other children. • Like being read to and taught new things • Interactive games (tag) • Like cooperative play (30-36 months) • Language used to express feelings • Strong desire for independence • Show pride in things they accomplish • Start simple problem-solving • Think more creatively (play with simple household objects) • Still reliant of parents but much more independent than 1-2
