Social Construction of Reality Jane Doe 12-09-2011 SOC/120 Christopher Jones One may hold many social statuses and roles. I am a mother, a grandmother, I work, and I am attending school. In each of these areas, I have a different status and role. At home for instance, my status is that of a mother and grandmother. My role is maternal. I perform the responsibilities included with being a mother and grandmother. Participating with my youngest child’s school and other activities also allows for a civic role. At work, I have the status of being a supervisor, colleague, and a subordinate. In each of these, my role is different. As a supervisor, I train and direct employees. They respect my position and look up to me for advice and knowledge. As a colleague, I am a member of a team. As a subordinate, I am someone who has to follow the rules and report to a supervisor. In school, I have the status of being a student. My role is to complete assignments and learn. This is a very different role for me than those that I hold at work. At work and at home as a mother, I have a role in which I have to teach and guide people. I believe that in both of these roles, people look up to me for knowledge and I direct them. As a student, I am seeking knowledge. I must study and learn and then submit my assignments to my instructor who directs me. In most of the areas of my life, I feel as though I have earned the status of being a well-functioning, knowledgably adult. Most of my roles are similar to each other in the area of work and school. Attending school gives me the status of a student. This role is opposite of the other roles in my life. In my roles
