The short story ‘Snowdrops’ written by Leslie Norris portrays the two different worlds of childhood and adulthood. She describes childhood as innocent and care free while on the other hand adulthood can be very stressful and full of grief. There are many ways the writer displays the different worlds of the children and an adult, in the story ‘Snowdrops’ Miss Webster is the main adult character. The Boy in the story is unaware of many things in the world, such as when he was walking back to school he discovered many things exciting which we, in our everyday lives, would have considered as normal. Such as when he went a ‘special way’ on his journey back to school while he could ‘balance along a low wall’ which would be exciting for young children. Another thing is that the boy has not experienced very many things in his life such as when he was eating his sandwich he could not recognize the bacon in it and has disbelief in his voice when he states ‘it can’t be.’ Also, Miss Webster tells the children about snowdrops and that they are going to see them. The boy gets very excited and when the time finally comes to go and see the ‘miraculous flowers; pale and fragile as the falling snow’ he describes them in such a beautiful and innocent way as to tell the reader the snowdrops are important and amazing in the boy’s view. In the short story Miss Webster’s boyfriend had recently died in a motorbike accident. The children were ‘blissfully unaware’ of this and when the morning of the funeral came and the boys arrived at school ‘Miss Webster wasn’t there.’ The children have no idea why Miss Webster wasn’t there. When Miss Webster finally arrives in school ‘she was dressed in a black frock, without any jewelry.’ This tells the reader
