Global Responsibility and Performance We will begin by watching the following video which introduces today’s case study: http://passeurdesciences.blog.lemonde.fr/2011/12/05/tueriez-vous-une-personne-pour-en-sauver-cinq/#xtor=AL-32280270 Case Study 1: A Virtual Dilemma by Pierre BARTHELEMY Your group manages the SNCF’s (the national French railway company) emergency tracking center that can switch the course of a train in the case of a dangerous or fatal technical incident. As you just saw in the video, a train driver has suddenly realized that his brakes have failed. The train is traveling fairly fast and the driver is totally amazed to see in the far distance a group of 5 people walking on the tracks in front of his train. No one should be in this particular area because it is totally rugged and since it has been carved through the mountains, there is no way to escape if confronted by a train. Maybe these people were hikers and thought that the train tracks were no longer in use. On the driver’s right, there is a fork that leads to another set of tracks where, amazing as it seems, a single person is walking. This person is also surrounded by steep mountain cliffs and cannot escape either. Your group must decide whether to change the direction of the train or not. On the left, the group of 5 people would be killed in an accident. On the right, this is not the case since it would be a deliberate decision to change the course of the train thus causing the death of one person. GROUP WORK: Answer the following questions and be prepared to defend your reasoning as a group. What would a Utilitarian do? ___________________________________________________________________________ What would be the most socially responsible action for the SNCF?
