Smartphone Paradigm Shift I remember when phones were attached to the wall in your house and that was the primary way of communication other than face to face. Later on in the early 1980’s is when the first cell phones were coming out that looked like bricks with a large antenna. Over time they gradually morphed from “bricks” into the hand held devices of today’s communication. Today the dominate cellular phone is commonly referred to as a smartphone. They make it easy for on-the-go social networking, texting, taking and sending pictures, personal planning, emailing, work related activities, music listening & downloading, and even video recording & watching. It seems now days you can download an application for practically everything on a smartphone. The Smartphone So what is a smartphone? A cellular phone with more advanced computing than basic mobile phones. Today’s smartphones have: fast processors, high resolution rear cameras, typically a front camera as well for video chatting, touchscreens, access to a vast and growing library of applications, navigation, and operate mainly off of Wi-Fi. The ability to be contacted anywhere you have signal and access information on the go that you otherwise would have to get to a computer to gain. Impact on Economy Some would say the impact on the economy is good. I would say it depends on the way you view it. The smartphone industry’s view is they are a multi-billion dollar industry providing jobs to millions of people around the globe. The social view is that productivity is on a decline over the normal rise year to year due to people being so involved with their smartphones and social media. Due to the complexity of industry numbers versus societal productivity researchers are finding it difficult to narrow down the true impact smartphones are having on the economy.
