SETTING SMART GOALS AND OBJECTIVES Why set Goals? Why should we take the time to set goals and objectives at all – after all everything changes so fast today that they are likely to be out of date before we get them finished? Things certainly change and it seems that change is getting faster rather than slower. However, that is a reason for planning rather than a reason for not planning. Humans manage better in change when we have a direction or goal that we can anchor back to from time to time. We may need to review and change the goal as we work through the year, but in most cases, the changes will not really change the targets of the goals much. There are many studies done on human beings that show very clearly that we give our best performance when we have goals and objectives to aim at. In fact, the three factors that lead to high performance across ALL industries and ALL nationalities are: 1. Established goals and objectives; 2. Constructive and regular feedback; and 3. The confidence and ability to achieve the goal and objectives. So setting good goals is very important. How do I make the Goals most useful? Be SMART The way you set the goals and objectives also affects the outcomes they produce. Spending time preparing goals is a good investment in high performance both personally and as a team and organization. The first step in setting goals is to gather some information and we will come to that in a moment. However, when we set goals we want them to have certain factors or elements that make them better structured and more likely to guide us to good performance. We say that our goals should be SMART! SMART goals and objectives are goals and objectives that have the following characteristics: S – specific They are goals and objectives that are quite clear and have a specific aim in mind.
