In the article Smart but Silent, Thomas Sowell states a very common problem that happens among parents with children that show no progress in speaking and communication at the age that they are supposed to. He gives example of very smart and famous people who also started to talk at very late like professor Stephen Camarata, Albert Einstein, Edward Teller, professor Richard Feynman. He argues that children start to talk at the older age does not always mean that they have mental problems. This can mean both the extremes, either the children are mentally retarded or outstanding smart. He says that most of those children who have problems in speaking have at least some relatives in their family that possessed intellectual minds. Also, it is a failed idea to announce a child is autistic by just look at the symptoms. Parents at all time always concern about how smart their children are. They not only want their child to look unique outstanding but also to outfox other children. Hence, it is understandable for parents to go insane and crazy when their children seem not to start talking at the age that others usually do. Research showed that about 15 to 20 percents of young children have some kind of communication disorders, especially among boys. It is very common for parents to get panic at this incident because in average a normal child can speak simple words and repeat what their parents say at the age of one. But there is nothing to worry about. The amount of communication between children and mom also determines how fast the children can start talking. When the mother spends more time talking to the child, the child will get used to the pronunciation of the words; therefore, can talk at early age.
