Small Business Considerations for Using E-Commerce for Sales and Advertising Abstract In today’s business world it is important for businesses of all sizes to stay competitive in the growing markets. Businesses have the ability to grow through the use of e-Commerce to reach a broader customer base while controlling the cost of doing business. E-Commerce has advantages and disadvantages for a business, which need to be considered before making the commitment to merchandise, advertise and sell through this channel. The most effective way to evaluate is through a SWOT Analysis. If the owner decides e-Commerce is the correct way to do business there are other considerations that must be made as using the internet allows for global sales, meaning the owner needs to be aware of different regulations, cultures, and languages. In this paper I will discuss these issues as if I am the owner of a small business on the New Jersey Boardwalk who is looking to expand through the use of e-Commerce. Small Business Considerations for Using E-Commerce for Sales and Advertising As a small business owner I have just opened a new clothing store named The C&J Boutique. The store specializes in children’s and young adult clothing, and it’s located on the New Jersey Boardwalk. I have decided to look at using e-Commerce to acquire, sell, and advertise the products I sell. Let’s take a look at the process I used to determine whether or not to get involved in e-Commerce. SWOT Analysis When considering whether to use e-Commerce or not I used a SWOT analysis. SWOT is short for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (Schneider, G. P.; 2011). By using this analysis I can identify if e-Commerce is going to work for The C&J Boutique, and how best to use the internet to sell merchandise, place orders with supplies, and advertise to grow my customer base.
