Slumdog Milllionaire Film Review. Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire hit the big screen in the UK in 2008. After creating a huge impact Slumdog Millionaire went on to win seven BAFTA Awards (including Best Film), five Critics' Choice Awards, four Golden Globes and eight Oscars, successful itself, it seems. Described as “the feel good film of the decade”, Slumdog Millionaire is actually a tragic story about love, death and betrayal. It conveys the truths and brutality of the life in the slums of Mumbai. Highlighting the tragic corruption within the Indian police, the film shows how they favour the rich – a practice endemic in the Indian caste system. The film was an underdog in the sense that no one expected it to be as good as the other films released at the time. It was released currently with “The Reader” and “The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button”. Critics thought that ‘Slumdog’ would fall behind these films as it was a low budget film with a few big names. Director Danny Boyle had not released a hit film since the 1990s with ‘Trainspotting’. ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ is a story about a boy who grows up through a series of tragedies during his search to find and win back the love of his life. He decides to enter a quiz show where he has the opportunity to win 20 million rupees. Before he answers the last question he is taken by the police for interrogation. They believe that it is not possible for “a slumdog” to come even close to winning that amount of money. As the film goes on it shows that the answers to all the questions lay in his life story. “Jamal Malik is one question away from winning 20 million rupees; how did he do it? A: he cheated B: he’s lucky C: he’s a genius D: it is written” This is the opening writing to ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, conveyed in the style of a quiz question for effect. At the end of the film the line “D: it is written”
