When Tan’s parents invite the boy and his family over for Christmas Eve dinner, she was on an emotional rollercoaster, she stated “I cried”(pg 349) and acknowledging the event as being a “shabby Chinese Christmas” (pg 349). Tan’s actions and emotions throughout the dinner was concentrated to only impress Robert. Tan makes it very clear of her newfound embarrassment of her family traditions and customs stating “my mother had outdone herself in creating a strange menu” (pg 349) because of Roberts presence she continued describing the menu items with disgust contradictory of what she would have said had Robert not been there. As the dinner progressed she threw herself deeper in despair when her mother brought out the whole steamed fish and her father offered her the fish cheek saying “Amy your favorite” (pg 350) and she “wanted to disappear” (pg 350). The shame of her customs did not end with that as the dinner grew to a close her father belched loudly stating “its polite Chinese custom to show you are
But once they make it to their new town, a large suburb close in proximity to Chicago, Kate gets the news that her book is being published leaving her no choice but to travel on a book tour away from her family for several weeks. While she's away promoting the book, Tom has a hard time keeping the house in order while at the same time coaching his winning college football team, causing the happy family to fall apart. This movie shows the battles you may face when raising twelve children. Today it is not very common to see families that have twelve children, and when you do see it, it is looked at in a whole different perspective. Of course there are certain circumstances, but most onlookers would more than likely judge any family with a dozen kids in a negative light due to it not being what others consider a "normal" situation.

After the presents were opened, my family went to the festival in Ponce, Puerto Rico and awaited for the kings to arrive. I remember constantly asking, “Are they here yet? When are they coming? Are they on their way?” After anxiously waiting for what felt like four years, they finally arrived on their camels and horses; my heart dropped to my stomach. It was just like seeing Santa on his sleigh in a Christmas parade.

They met my friends and my friends met them, everything seemed so perfect until June 17. That Saturday Night Zamiir texted Kayla and I and asked us if we could get him something to eat because his friend was drunk and he didn’t want to walk anywhere alone. Kayla and I never texted him back because we went to sleep really early that night, and later that day we got a phone call from our parents and they were crying.
