This story is about how Luther and Nora Krank try to avoid the Christmas frenzy. On the Sunday after Thanksgiving, they bring their daughter Blair to the airport. She is going on a year-long assignment to a remote area of Peru with the Peace Corps. Since Blair is gone, Luther comes up with the idea that they should skip Christmas because it could save them lots of time and money. He ends up surprising Nora with a ten-day cruise to the Caribbean aboard the Island Princess. At first Nora dismisses the idea of skipping Christmas, but it doesn’t take long for Nora to adjust to the idea of no Christmas shopping, no Christmas tree, and no Christmas Eve party they host every year. Their neighbors become outraged with their decision to boycott Christmas because it hurts their chances of winning best decorated block. The neighbors start to protest on the Kranks lawn. The Kranks anxiously await their Christmas Day departure. On Christmas Eve, the Kranks are all packed and ready for their next day departure. Without warning, Blair calls to tell them she's at Miami International Airport, on her way home with her Peruvian fiancé as a surprise for her parents. She's anxious to introduce Enrique to Christmas in America, and when she asks if they're having their usual party that night, a panicked Nora says yes. They end up having to throw together a party in 4 hours. Luther also ends up having to put up all the decorations that would have usually taken at least 2 days to complete. While he is putting up Frosty on the roof, he falls off the roof and ends up hanging in mid-air by Frosty’s wires. Luther is saved by the same neighbors that were protesting him. The party still goes on and Luther has to celebrate Christmas. Since he can’t take the cruise, he gives the trip to his neighbor who is having a very bad Christmas because his wife has been diagnosed with a terminal
