SK TELECOM GOES EGALITARIAN Brief Case: Deferring people in higher positions was deeply ingrained in South Korean telecommunications companies. Such deferring, sometimes to the extent that junior staff members are not allowed to initiate conversations with anyone above their boss. Recently, one of South Korean based telecommunication company adopts a new value advocating the removal of inequalities among their employees. SK Telecom is removing its five-tier management hierarchy, and implementing changes in employees’ titles. Younger staffs (20s) are also now assigned to project leadership responsibilities. Throughout these dramatic shifts, it is hoped that creativity and decision-making can be improved. SK Telecom’s initiative is not completely new to South Korea. Small high-tech companies already embrace egalitarian values and flatter corporate structures. But SK Telecom is among the first large firms in the country to attempt this culture shift, and it has met with resistance along the way. Discussion Questions and Answers: 1. Which South Korean cultural value is SK Telecom attempting to distance itself from? What indicators of this value are identified in this case study? What other artifacts of this cultural value would you notice while visiting a South Korean company that upheld this national culture? SK Telecom is attempting to distance itself from strong hierarchical culture in their company. Such culture may be identified by the extent of how low-hierarchy employees are empowered. Employee empowerment is our main indicator as it measures the discretion between each tier to another. SK Telecom’s level of employee empowerment was considered low considering the fact that their staffs can’t barely express their opinions and ideas. For example, it is stated that those below the fourth tier may not be allowed to question SK Telecom strategist’s decision.
