As I read the six pillars of character, I gathered that each pillar has its own role in the recipe for character. All six pillars play a crucial role in building the character of a person. Trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship are all essential components of character. However, the two pillars that appeal to me the most are pillars that I feel I can implement more into my own life. The pillar that stands out the most to me is responsibility. Responsibility is an often overlooked quality. In today’s society responsibility is very important. In these trying times we must all remain accountable for our actions and obligations. As an aspiring educator I believe that no other profession requires responsibility levels as high as those of a teacher. Not only does the teacher’s job depend upon how well his job is done, the livelihood of the students taught by the teacher is at stake. How and what the children learn early on can affect them for the rest of their lives. The process of learning for the kids not only begins with how responsible they are, but it continues as far as the responsibility of the teacher will take them. Citizenship is a pillar of character that hits home with me the most. I feel as though as long as one is displaying the characteristics of citizenship, that person will always be a good example for those who are in a position to look up to him. As an educator, one must always display the characteristics of good citizenship. It is never known when a student or the parent of a student is watching, and the impression that is given off can affect how effective a teacher is. A teacher has a better chance of instilling good values in a student if that teacher can be seen leading by example.
