Singapore's pragmatism in crisis management

Crisis is defined as a period where things are very uncertain that actions must be taken in order to avoid a greater loss or a complete disaster. When countries are concerned, this term refers to the times where the affairs of a country are affected in a large scale. There is no country in this world that has never faced a crisis before, not even Singapore. Singapore is a small country with a great dependence on other countries to survive, meaning that it is very vulnerable to any issues any countries are facing. Given this reason, crises have to be managed effectively in order for Singapore to survive. One of the methods available for Singapore to implement is to be pragmatic and forward-looking in every aspects of its governance, meaning that in its governance, Singapore has to employ practical solutions to all problems instead of actions based on mere theories or principles with questionable effectiveness, and to be able to open itself to new ideas and development while fulfilling the future needs of its people. In this essay, I will provide my views pertaining to this issue where Singapore is concerned, regarding the effective way of crisis management, while taking reference from the article “Budget Analysis: Sticking to sound principles” from The Straits Times as well as taking examples as references and applying my own understanding on the subject itself. I, myself, agree to a large extent that being pragmatic and forward-looking in its governance ensures Singapore’s survival in this fast-paced world nowadays, especially when we look at how Singapore has successfully handled many previous crises such as SARS. Various strategies and actions have been taken by Singapore government in handling these crises effectively, hence, it is not surprising that Singapore, although with its great dependence on other countries and its small size and population, is able to
