Significance of Radon and its preventive measures Radon (Rn), at one time called thoron, is a naturally occurring, odorless and highly radio-active gas released as a by-product of decaying of uranium found underground. Radon itself is a harmless and inert gas but causes damage when it further decays into chemically active particles of polonium and lead. Radon has a number of uses as for example, used as a neutron source; it has a role in predicting earthquakes. It is also mainly used in radiotherapy treatment for cancer. Ironically, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer as well as a leading cause of pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema1. The main source of human exposure to Radon is by way of infiltration of the gas into homes. This is usually accomplished by seepage of the gas through cracks in the foundation and basement floors or through floor drains. Therefore it is highly important to address the problem of Radon exposure by testing of radon levels while constructing new buildings and in existing buildings2. The primary strategy for controlling Radon exposure is by sub slab depressurization. This is done by placing Pipes under the house and using a radon fan to help in venting out of the Radon away from the homes. Additional measures also need to be taken such as sealing of entry points by closing cracks3. The government should have Public awareness programmes and educate the general population regarding the harmful effects of Radon and how to take measures to reduce its exposure in their homes.
